Hamit Gorele was born in Gorele in 1900.
He completed his primary and junior education in Gumushane
and high school in Istanbul.
He enrolled in Engineering Collecge in 1922,but two years later entered the
Academy of fine Arts graduading in 1928. He went on to work at the studios of
Hikmet onal And Ibrahim Calli, meanwhile also teaching art at the American
College for Girls and Galatasaray High school. The same year he won second prize
in the European Painting Copetition and was awarded a scholarship to study in
France by the ministry of Education. He received commendation from the ministry
for his successful work in Paris on 16th februrary 1929. Two
of his paintings ("wife of pharoh") and "the odalisgue" where exhibited along
side the works of the such celebrited artists as CEZANNE, MATISSE, PICASSO,
BONNARTS and LHOTE at a mixed exhibition at the grand galarie moderne on
montparnasse in 1930.
Gorele worked at the studio of Andrette Lhote at the academia moderne for 4
years. After returning to Turkey in 1933 he participated in the exihibitations
of the society of Independent
PAINTERS AND SCULPTERS of which he was president and the sametime held one man
exhibitons.
His paintings were the earliest examples of Turkish Modern Art, and he bore the
word brunt
scritism rected against his innovative concepts. As well as participating in
exhibitations at home and abroad. He waked along untring struggle on behalf of
modern Turkish art though the medium of articles, essays reviews and
translations a selfless struggle in which he was mostly alone.
In 1965 Gorele was appointed president of the association of contemporary
Turkish artists, and in 1967 revised artist of the year award.
In 1978 Gorele became one of two painters to receive the state order of Merit.
An artist who is a major milestone in the development of Turkish art died in
June 1980.
